About:
This jar is made the same clay as the rye jar but it is glazed (incl. inside) with tenmoku glaze. Its shiny surface makes it very visibly seen even its dark colour. I personally love all the jars made by Jiri Duchek, Lang and also Bero. There are never enough jars available. Love opening them, sniffing tea and sometimes guessing what tea I am storing here (when a paper slip is not inside saying the name of the tea).
The process of making is quite laborious and craftsmanship is required. If you notice the jar outside bottom part, there are no marks of fingers holding the jar while dipped in the glaze. Also the glaze/literally mud in this case is applied on a wet slip (jar is not prefired). So it could happen that the raw clay jar, melted in a liquid, watery glaze might start to melt and be spoiled. Also the glazing of outside and inside must be done fast as the glaze flow has to be controlled. Mastery of Jiri Duchek solves this all.
Tenmoku style glaze is applied to a clay slip. Ten moku literally ‘Heaven’s Eye’ temple in China where iron glazed tea cups were used/originate. These (mostly) cups made fame in second half of 14th century Japan.
Myself I like a lot these natural brown coloured ceramics that have for me a kind of soft and warm touch and are pleasure to touch and look at. They are not shouting in the interior of our living space. Dark, brown colour creates natural or rather nature like appearance.
Photographing such jar is also mastery, so forgive me my amateur photos trying to convey the best possible natural image.
